Sick of waiting for the first coat of waterproofing to dry? Or maybe you’re fed up with priming surfaces before adding a waterproofing layer? BAL’s new product, Waterproof 1C, might just be what you need to save you time and money on your next job.
Waterproof 1C is a ready mixed waterproofing system that only requires one coat. Suitable for use prior to tiling internal areas, the waterproofing compound is ready to tile in just 2 hours. Plus, it can be used without priming on certain backgrounds, and provides crack bridging without tape on static cracks or board joints up to 3mm. Waterproof 1C is a great alternative to BAL Tank-it or BAL WP1.
This innovative waterproofing solution also includes BAL’s Fibre Strand Technology for improved strength. Easy to apply straight out of the bucket, it provides coverage of up to 6m2 – perfect for any domestic shower, bathroom or wetroom. BAL Waterproof 1C provides complete protection against water ingress, giving you peace of mind that your projects will last the test of time.

Where to use BAL Waterproof 1C
BAL Waterproof 1C can be used with NO priming on the following substrates:
- Plasterboard
- BAL Board (smooth side)
- Screeds
- Concrete
- BAL Rapid Mat
- Plywood overlays (floors only)
- Cement: sand render
BAL have created a special primer for use with Waterproof 1C, called Primer 1C. To use, simply apply one coat neat of BAL Primer 1C and allow to dry for 15-30 minutes before applying BAL Waterproof 1C. The following substrates require priming:
- Plaster
- Cement boards
- BAL Board (tiling side)
How to use BAL Waterproof 1C
Here's a step by step guide for using BAL Waterproof 1C on walls or floors.
- If required, prime all surfaces with one coat of neat BAL Primer 1C and allow to dry for 15-30mins.
- Before applying BAL Waterproof 1C, use the self-adhesive BAL Scrim Tape at: Internal and external corners of walls/partitions, Wall junctions with base/upstands/columns, At pipe penetration points/drainage channels/outlets, Junctions of different base/background materials, Cracks and board joints in backgrounds over 3mm wide.
- Using a suitable roller, 4mm notched trowel or brush, apply BAL Waterproof 1C over the whole area, including the BAL Scrim Tape.
- Wall: Using a roller, 4mm notched trowel or brush, apply one coat of BAL Waterproof 1C to walls but ensuring a min. 0.8mm thickness.
- Floor: Apply BAL Waterproof 1C to the floor at a min. 1.6mm thickness. NOTE: two coats may be required to achieve the thickness. It is recommended to use two coats to ensure the required thickness.
- Allow membrane to dry for a minimum of 2 hours before tiling with a suitable BAL tile adhesive.
