Marmox Thermoblock is a highly insulating, load-bearing building block that replaces the bottom course of blocks or bricks in a wall to eliminate or significantly reduce the thermal bridge at the wall floor junction. Made of a strong and rigid epoxy-concrete frame that is integrated with fire-resistant XPS that gives the outstanding thermal insulation providing y values of between 0.03 to 0.07W/mK.

Although Thermoblocks are lightweight they are extremely strong and stable having a mean compressive strength of 9.0N/mm2 so can be used in most walls. Additionally, because they are impermeable to water they can be used in damp conditions without any deterioration in their insulating properties so, not only does Thermoblock reduce thermal bridging, but it also creates a moisture barrier.

The latest UK building regulations requires “continuous insulation over the whole building envelope.” Previously, insulation could not be placed under walls because it would compress but now using just one layer of Marmox Thermoblock allows the insulation to be completely gap free without any thermal bridge or heat loss.

Marmox Thermoblock is available in full cartons; 600x100x65mm blocks come in cartons of 18 while 600x140x65mm blocks come in cartons of 12. The price shown is the current per block price.

Frequently asked questions about Marmox Thermoblocks

What are the Advantages of ThermoBlock?

Marmox Thermoblocks are thermal insulating blocks that actively block heat leaving your home, reducing your heating costs. They are lightweight and easy to install for fast construction. Their durable components make them sound insulating, fire resistant, and water resistant.

How to install Marmox Thermoblocks?

The blocks should be laid over the damp proof course onto the standard bricklaying mortar which needs to be evenly spread over the entire surface of the blocks, bricks or concrete. Note that, depending on the outside ground level, the blocks can be laid either over or under the damp proof course.

Are Marmox Thermoblocks safe?

Thermoblock safely transfers load without deflection or long term creep. The reinforced blocks support masonry, wood or steel framed walls and parapets. Unlike other closed cell, foam type thermal break materials. The top and bottom material surfaces provide for a mortar bond in masonry applications.

How much does Marmox Thermoblock weigh?

Thickness of insulation (to EN 823): 60 mm. Weight (to EN 822): 100 mm: 1.6 kg; 140 mm: 1.9 kg; 215 mm: 2.5 kg. Thermal conductivity (K-Value) of insulant (to EN 12664/ EN 13165): 0.028 W/m·K.

Is Marmox Thermoblock waterproof?

Being made using an extruded polystyrene, which is closed cell, Thermoblocks are completely impermeable to water. This means they can be used in damp conditions without any loss of their insulating properties. So, not only do Marmox Thermoblocks reduce thermal bridging but they also create a moisture barrier.

Can you cut Thermoblock?

If you need to cut Marmox Thermoblock to size, you can do so easily by cutting through the XPS foam using a standard hacksaw between the load bearing cylinders. If you need to cut through the concrete cylinders for whatever reason, we suggest using a rotary bladed cutter.

What is the fire rating of Marmox Thermoblock

120minutes

Marmox Thermoblocks exhibit no flexing and no creep so provide a stable rigid base. Mean compressive strength of 9.0N/mm2 (to EN772-1) Fire resistance >120minutes (to EN1365-1) Water Absorption <3.5% (to EN771-4).

How to install Marmox Thermoblock

Marmox Thermoblock should be laid either over or under a suitable damp proof course depending on the outside ground level. The blocks, bricks, and concrete should have a bricklaying mortar spread evenly over the entire surface area. The mortar used should be of adequate designation class with uniform thickness to comply with BS standards.

Thermoblocks are installed onto the base of the wall so the Thermoblock height matches the ground floor level insulation and should not exceed the level of the adjoining floor. The block should be pressed firmly into position and then tapped down until they are stable and level. It's important to ensure the Thermoblocks are laid tightly beside eachother and that rebated ends are tightly butted together.

If you need to cut Marmox Thermoblock to size, you can do so easily by cutting through the XPS foam using a standard hacksaw between the load bearing cylinders. If you need to cut through the concrete cylinders for whatever reason, we suggest using a rotary bladed cutter. Whilst Thermoblocks are not classified as hazardous, you should always wear glasses and a face mask when cutting the blocks to protect your mouth and eyes from dust.

You can improve the water tightness of the Marmox Thermoblock with the use of an acrylic sealant in the rebated joints if moisture is expected. Once this has been done, another block is tapped into the mortar and pressed, so that surplus sealant can be squeezed out.

A layer of standard bricks and blocks should be laid on top of Marmox Thermoblock with soft mortar. when doing this its important to ensure the weight of this layer is distributed evenly over the surface of the blocks. If hollow bricks are used, the hollow/indent must be facing upwards.
